Rainbow Rolling
Creating a colour blend is a really useful technique to have up your sleeve! It is a method for creating a blend of colours that can be applied to your printmaking plate (e.g. lino or wood).
Watch the video below for a demonstration of this technique then try it yourself with one of your lino or woodblocks!
Now It’s Your Turn
1. Select the printing inks to use for your rainbow roll - maybe start with two colours.
2. Choose your printing block (lino or wood) and a roller just slightly larger than the block.
3. Place your inks onto the surface you are rolling onto. Links them up next to each other. You can use two or more inks
4. Start rolling the inks down the rolling surface. Keep the roller going in one direction only and the two inks will be seen rolled out side by side. Move the roller just a little side to side to blend the colours in the middle to lend the colours.
5. Now apply this colour blend to the printing block - rolling in one direction only. Apply enough ink so the surface is covered properly.
6. Print the block as you would usually to see your colour blend in its full glory.
7. Try it again - maybe with more colours this time.
