This is what current students are saying

Christine Duncan, 2020

This is an amazing course! (I am an absolute beginner who has previously enjoyed your 30 day sketchbook challenge)
Although I have marked these sections as complete, by no stretch of the imagination have I ‘completed’ anything! I am simply impatient to see what else you are going to share Susan! I will certainly revisit the previous posts regularly.

Jackie Browning, 2021

Thank you so much Susan. The course has been so helpful particularly in helping me to focus on how to develop my art practice. Setting goals and deciding how to achieve them is something I needed to do and now I feel I have.

Suzie Battersby, 2021

Thank you so much for a most enjoyable course, Susan and for sharing so much constructive guidance which has really helped me get stuck into a regular sketching habit! Creating goals and making charts for tracking my progress have been especially useful for me. The course followed on well from doing your January 30-day sketchbook challenge,.... I’m likely to opt to do another of your courses soon!...

A regular sketching habit…

A regular sketching habit is at the heart of all my creative activities – and I have a lot of those. I find that picking up a pencil, pen or paintbrush in short regular bursts keeps me in tune with my creativity and keeps me inspired for longer or larger projects that I undertake. After years of practice and experimentation I now carry out regular sketching in small portable sketchbooks. And this regular habit is what I intend to share with you throughout this course.

As we progress through the modules I will show you some of my own sketchbooks, talk you through some great tools and materials to use and discuss how important it is to select themes and topics that suit you.

I will then go on to discuss mindset and approach to achieving daily sketching. This includes the use positive language, understanding exactly WHY you want to sketch this regularly and important concepts such as ‘there is no wrong’ and it’s all about ‘process not perfection’. There are two whole modules on mindset to really help you get sketching!

I will then share and demonstrate a few short drawing exercises that you might find handy and of course help you to set your personal goals for your sketching.

You will need some basic sketching equipment such a pencil, ink pens, some paints, coloured pens, watercolour pencils and a small sketchbook.

Thank you - I have found the course inspirational in the fact that it is getting me back into daily sketching and doodling which personally I find relaxing and it takes me to a happy place.

Hi there, I’m Susan

Sketchbook mentor, art shop raider and pencil hoarder

When I’m not teaching, running my pottery cafe in Woking, writing books about sketching, or talking about all things creative, I’m busy being a mama to my very strong-willed daughter, dancing Salsa, practicing yoga, or sewing my own (often lovely, occasionally terrible) clothes.

So, believe me when I say I get it - life’s full-on busy! It’s why my own creativity has fluctuated over the years. And it’s what inspired me to create this space for you. So that amid life's beautiful, messy chaos, your sketchbook practice remains as easy, accessible, and constant as possible.

Let’s keep it simple. Let’s just sketch for the love of sketching, shall we?
