Hi there, I’m Susan
When I’m not teaching, running my pottery cafe in Woking, writing books about sketching, or talking about all things creative, I’m busy being a mama to my very strong-willed daughter, dancing Salsa, practicing yoga, or sewing my own clothes.
So, believe me when I say I get it - life’s full-on busy! It’s why my own creativity has fluctuated over the years. And it’s what inspired me to create this space for you. So that amid life's beautiful, messy chaos, your sketchbook practice remains as easy, accessible, and constant as possible.
Let’s keep it simple. Let’s just sketch for the love of sketching, shall we?
Here’s what we have been sketching in 2024 so far...
Colourful Cactus
With cactus and succulents as our subject matter, we explored drawing these curious plants in pencil, coloured pencil, watercolour and acrylic paint. (Oh, and many of us went cactus shopping too!)
Pen and Ink: Mark-making Explorations
As well as making our own drawing tools out of twigs and sticks we experimented with dip pens and fountain pens to make marks on paper. We also explored different drawing techniques using ink.
Watercolour Patterns
Whilst playing with watercolour we created a selection of different patterns and designs in our sketchbooks. Super-helpful for exploring how this paint type works.
Sketching Daily Scenes
From food diaries to the things we find in our pockets, we are sketching those convenient items and scenes we come across in our daily lives.
Simple Printing
In May, we looked at different way to use printmaking in our sketchbooks. From carving into rubbers, to using paint on everyday objects, we made a mess and we printed fun patterns.
Folk Art
Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian folk art we created floral symmetrical sketches, folk art animated and Hygge houses. This was a fun and relaxing month of sketching and painting.
Skies and Clouds
In March we gazed skywards to the clouds and clear blue skies to depict the sky in different ways and different materials in our sketchbooks.
Doodling for Fun
A super-popular month with members, in Feb 2024 we simply doodled! From organic shapes to little forests and more... we simply whiled away the hours making marks.
Understanding Your Materials
At the start of 2024 we began the year by finding ways to understand the materials we use to sketch better. From testing out materials on the page to sketching the same subject in different ways this was super helpful!
Joining Inspire means gaining entry to a supportive community of like-minded scribblers who are just as passionate about sketching as you are. And likely just as time-poor!
By sharing your work (always optional), you can receive constructive, positive feedback, tips, and suggestions for improving your sketches. Seeing others share their progress can encourage you to show up and create more often. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, creating a sense of camaraderie that’s lost when you’re sketching alone. Many of us have even met in real life through workshops and retreats.
The private Facebook group is also a hub of inspiration, with members sharing their work, techniques, and ideas for creative projects, which can jumpstart new ideas for your sketchbook adventures.
Here’s what we used to accelerate our creativity in 2023 (instant access to ALL this when you join)
Simple Bookbinding
As the year draws to a close, we made our own sketchbooks ready for 2024. We also exchanged sketches with other members in our Annual Inspire Sketch Swap!
Sacred Geometry in Sketching
Members took a closer look at sacred geometry and how we can use this in sketching. From optical illusions to simple patterns we had a lot of fun!
Textures in Pencil
This month, with guest artist Rachel Drake we got our pencils out and started to create Trish and interesting textures inspired by buildings and architecture.
Still Life Studies
In September we looked towards still life as inspiration. We sketched cups in gouache, little vases in pen, fruit in coloured pencil and a study of items in pencil.
Expressive Landscapes
A wonderful topic for the summer months - landscapes. We got out and about and expressive in our landscape sketches seeking inspiration from both nature and other artists.
Sketching Animals
This month we invited guest artist Ali C Board into the community to share her sketching techniques with watercolour and mixed media to sketch animals.
Loose Inky Botanicals
This month was a combination of ink and botanicals on the sketchbook page. We made bold marks and lines to create lots of lovely leaves and flowers.
Travel Journalling
This month guest artist Sophie Greenwood took us on her travels as we sketched and journalled about our trips out and about.
Fun with Faces
From Picasso-style deconstructed faces to tracing images, facial proportions and blind contour drawing, we looked at lots of ways to sketch faces in our sketchbooks.
Collage and Cut Outs
Inspired by the works of Henri Matisse we got our scissors out to create fun and colourful collages. Sometimes you don't even need a pencil to fill a sketchbook page!
Feathers and Finches
With guest Australian artist, Natalie Eslick we took out our coloured pencils to draw feathers and birds in her detailed realistic style.
Drawing 3D Shapes
Sometimes you just need to go back to basics, and this month we looked at how to replicate 3D forms on the 2D page to improve our technical drawing skills.
