Gain confidence with colour...

I am so excited to take you on a journey into exploring colour!

This course is all about understanding how colour works through basic colour theory, observing colour in the world around you and becoming confident using colour in your sketchbook and finished pieces of art.

The course is suitable for beginners (or those wanting to try out coloured materials for the first time) and contains six separate art tutorials on exploring colour in your sketchbooks taught by myself - Susan Yeates, plus additional video lessons and tips.

Video Trailer

Watch the video below as I introduce you to this course, Exploring Colour.

Why join me?

This course is playful, informative, inspiring, will show you some new sketching techniques, boost your creativity and fill your sketchbook (or sheets of paper) with plenty of colour!

It will guide you through a basic understanding of colour theory before then providing a series of tutorials and exercises in your sketchbook to put into practice your new knowledge.

The tutorials and exercises demonstrate how we can observe colour in the world around us, they explore and explain watercolour paints (great for beginners to this medium!), invite you to create your own colour wheel and look at colours in photographs in more detail. All six of the colour tutorials have video lessons.

By completing this course you will:

  • gain a good understanding of colour theory
  • learn how to mix colour like a pro!
  • produce your own colour wheel (mixed yourself!)
  • understand watercolour paint and how to use it
  • feel confident and comfortable with working in colour
  • have colour swatches of all your watercolour paints as a reference
  • have a number of go-to exercises to play with colour
  • have pages of colour filling your sketchbooks
  • and just basically fall in love with using colour!

Why Colour?

Watch the video below as I walk about why I think you should explore colour...

Don't just take my word for it!

Here is what current students say about this course:

Liz Matthews, Feb 2021

"The colour theory course is really fun and enjoyable. It’s given me time to think and observe. Colour theory has fascinated me, but I have found it complicated at times. This course keeps everything simple, and is thought provoking. I would recommend this course. Money well spent. Thank you Susan."

Sharon Adams, Feb 2021

"This course has really expanded my knowledge of colour. I have lots of tutorials to repeat and to fall back on when needed. Thank you, Susan. You are an inspiring instructor!"

Express yourself through colour

Colour plays such an important part in how we express ourselves through art and the use of the right colours in combination can really lift a piece and give it additional levels of meaning.

For some, an understanding of what colours to use together comes easy but for many this is information we need to learn to really express what we mean through our paintings and drawings successfully. It can be tricky to know what colours to use when and how to mix colours to get exactly what you want. It is so helpful to understand how to mix colours and create the result you want - especially when you only have a limited palette of paints for example.

When you understand how colour works and how to mix colours properly you give yourself a full rainbow to play with!

Colour is so fun and so vibrant and I want to share my love for playing with colour here in this short online course. Each exercise is designed to build upon the last and show you a new way to understand and play with colour.

      Hi there, I’m Susan

Sketchbook mentor, art shop raider and pencil hoarder

When I’m not teaching, running my pottery cafe in Woking, writing books about sketching, or talking about all things creative, I’m busy being a mama to my very strong-willed daughter, dancing Salsa, practicing yoga, or sewing my own (often lovely, occasionally terrible) clothes.

So, believe me when I say I get it - life’s full-on busy! It’s why my own creativity has fluctuated over the years. And it’s what inspired me to create this space for you. So that amid life's beautiful, messy chaos, your sketchbook practice remains as easy, accessible, and constant as possible.

Let’s keep it simple. Let’s just sketch for the love of sketching, shall we?
